Flow: A Unique Armchair Inspired by the Flow of Water

An Innovative Design by Mattice Boets

Inspired by one of the oldest and most recognizable elements of nature, water and stone, the Flow armchair by Mattice Boets captures the essence of fluidity and strength. This innovative design combines the simplicity of a rock with the graceful movement of water, resulting in a chair that is both visually striking and incredibly comfortable.

Flow is not just an ordinary armchair; it is a piece of art that tells a story. Boets explains that the design started with a bare rock, the simplest form of a chair. Then, the water came, flowing all around the rock and the person sitting. It is the interaction between the rock and the water that gave birth to this unique design. The result is an armchair that perfectly fits around the human body, creating a sense of harmony and comfort.

What sets Flow apart from other armchairs is its ability to mimic the flow of water. The chair's shape and form resemble a static image of water flowing over rocks. This dynamic design element not only adds visual interest but also ensures that the chair adapts to the body of the person sitting in it. From every angle, Flow is a captivating piece of furniture that stands out in any space.

To bring this design to life, Boets utilized a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The armchair features a steel inner frame that is pressed and welded together, providing a strong and durable construction. The chair is then split into multiple pieces, which are slid into the frame and securely attached. Variable density foam is used throughout the chair to provide support where needed, ensuring maximum comfort.

With dimensions of 57 cm wide, 62 cm deep, and 70 cm tall, Flow is designed to accommodate a wide range of body types. The seating height of 46 cm, measured at its highest point, ensures a comfortable and relaxed position. The armrests, in combination with the slightly reclined seating area, provide additional support and enhance the overall comfort of the chair.

Flow is not just a piece of furniture; it is an experience. When sitting in this armchair, one can't help but feel a connection to the elements of nature. The deep blue color of the chair reminds us of its inspiration and the story behind its creation. It is a design that goes beyond functionality and becomes a part of the person sitting in it.

The Flow armchair project began in October 2019 in Kortrijk, Belgium, and was finalized in January 2020. Throughout the development process, Boets faced various challenges, including the creation of a prototype using hard foam. Despite the complexities of the organic design, Boets sculpted the foam by hand, resulting in a successful prototype that showcased the true essence of Flow.

Recognized for its exceptional design, Flow has received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This award celebrates the innovative and creative nature of the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life. Flow is a testament to the power of art, science, design, and technology coming together to create something truly remarkable.
